Memorial Service, Washington DC, Dec. 11, 2010

--------------------
"Exactly this time of the year, I arrived at Granduncle's house in New York with my Uncle Yonghui - that was the first time when I met this legendary elder of the family in person.

One day, after a walk around the neighborhood, he was showing us his indoor swimming pool; under Uncle Yonghui's encouragements, I climbed up to the diving board and sang an old song. Granduncle, who wore a light-gray sweatshirt and holding a golf club he always carried when working outdoors, (Mom said that that served for self-defense from the mean dogs) stood on the other side of the pool, listened attentively... after the first song as I bowed to the two audience, he dropped the golf club, gave me a big applause and yelled "Encore!" (that was how I learned this word first hand!) He soon found out that I could actually sing a lots of songs that he used to sing decades ago during his youth in China.

That evening after dinner, he wanted to show me something - boxes after boxes of cassettes full of songs from operas! He helped me copy two cassettes of songs that I still cherish - they had kept me company for many year when I painted in the studio.

I would like to contribute a song "Ave Maria" to Granduncle at his memorial service. I hope this song will comfort his soul and everybody here today...  " - Nian Hua

"I recently made a painting -  flowers that will never die especially for Granduncle. I thought about him a lot while I was painting... "
