 Dr. Chao Lin

- an outstanding figure in twentieth-century Chinese Geography

 

" Lin Chao, Professor of Peking University, was born in 1909 and died in 1991. He accomplished much during a long and exceptionally full career that spanned great and disruptive changes in China, and more than minor changes in his chosen discipline. He led the Chinese geographical community into the International Geographical Union in 1949. Chao, Director of Institute of Geography of China, chose to serve his country and Chinese geography when he had several attractive and lucrative options abroad, including an offer in 1949 from the University of Liverpool, where he had completed his doctorate."

Dr. Chao Lin took the second Sino-British Boxer Indemnity Fund Scholarship exam and won the scholarship in Nanjing, China. . There was a total of 26 winners from China. After being awarded a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Geography, Liverpool University, UK. Dr. Chao Lin returned to China, August 1938. He was the first one who received Ph.D. degree in the Department of Geography, Liverpool University.

Dr, Lin Joined the China Institute of Geography in Beipei, Sichuan Province in Septemper 1940. Then, he was appointed as chief director of the China Institute of Geography, Summer 1947.

Dr, Chao Lin attended the 16th Congress of International Geography Union (IGU) in Portugal on April 8 - 15, 1949 The photo on the left was taken for passport in order to attend the IGU.
   
dad2Dr. Chao Lin was invited by The Sino_British Council to visit the geographic institutes and universities in England in May 1949.

As a consultant of The Delegation of China, Dr. Lin attended 4 th Congress of United Nations Educational and Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris in September 1949. He returned to China from Europe in February 1950,

1950-1952, Dr. Chao Lin was working as a professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and then 1952 - 1991, he was working as a professor, Department of Geography, Peking University. He Passed away in Beijing on June 1, 1991 at the age of 82,
