Chan Lin

Chan Lin (1914 - 2010), was the fourth among his siblings. Like his brothers and sisters, Chan attended Jieyang Zhenli Middle School. However, unlike his gentleman brothers, he was a muscle builder, a fearless street fighter, a head of the dual good Samaritans - gangsters. Fortunately, he worshiped his elder brother Chao, who kept him on track for his education. Following Chao, he also studied geography in the college of Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou. In 1948, Chan traveled to U.S. and he completed his graduate study of geography for Master degree in 1951 in Columbia University, New York. Shortly afterward, Chan's wife, Dr. Liu, a gynecologist opened a clinic in the Chinatown in New York. Hence, Chan became the manager of the clinic. While Chan and his wife, Dr. Liu served the Chinese community for women health, they were actively involved in the community's social activities. During the years from 1949 to 1970, the communications between Chan and his brothers and sisters in main land of China was totally cut off due to the enmity between U.S. and China. When China was accepted as the member of United Nations in 1971, Chen was overwhelmed with joys. He opened the door of his house to welcome the Chinese diplomats, who arrived at New York for their ground breaking, historic task. As America was such a perplexing land to those Chinese diplomats, Chan voluntarily helped the settlement of those Chinese diplomats. Through the years from 1980's to 1990's, Chan donated significant amounts of money to various causes to improve the US-China relationship, such Richard Nixon's presidential race, visiting programs of academic scholars…. etc. After 1971 the relation between US and China was trending to normalization. Finally, in 1975, Chan, his wife Shu-Yuan Liu were able to visit his brothers and sister in China after 26 years of its isolation. When the diplomatic relation of the two countries was formally normalized in 1978, Chan immediately started sponsoring the younger generations of Lin and Liu's families in China to come to U.S. for further educations. More than fifteen members of Lin extended-family were able to come to U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia to study because of the financial supports provided by Chan. Their lives were forever brightly changed because of Chan and his wife Dr. Liu. While working as a manager in his wife's clinic, Chan was also a successful investor in real estate and financial market, yet, he lived a simple life and spent plausible millions to help younger generations. His impact to the Lin extended family is unparallel. Chan had three sons: Xiao-Hui Lin and Duan-Hui Lin from his first marriage with Yu-Chun Huang, George with Dr. Liu.
