Memorial Service, Washington DC, Dec. 11, 2010
--Yanhui Lin

"Today we gather to express our condolence and respect to Uncle Chan. To me, uncle was one of the most influential people in my life.

Thirty years ago, uncle brought me to the U. S. for pursuing my higher education. Like most of the young during the culture revolution, I started my life as a farmer when I was 17. Since most colleges and universities were closed and only a few young people were chosen to enter colleges, attending college was luxurious for most young Chinese during that time. I was one of them.

Uncle wrote a letter to my father after his visit to China in 1975. Uncle said in the letter:” Herb was very upset and asked me why so many cousins in Mainland China didn’t go to colleges? I am so anxious to get them out as soon as possible”.

Knowing that I was afraid of going to the U.S., uncle sent a letter to my father, and said:

“If Yanhui is willing to come to the US for higher education, I will do my best to help him in any way as he is your only son. I will do my best so he does not continue to suffer.” Uncle said to my father that “Yanhui was one of the victims of the difficult time, it’s not his fault. I hope everyone will encourage him to come.”

During the 80s, six of our cousins from Mainland China came to U.S. for a higher education. It is impossible without uncle’s encouragement and financial support. Uncle provided an opportunity for me and made my dream come true! Four years ago, my son came to U. S. to continue his education and uncle also helped him finacially. Today, my son continues to benefit from uncle’s generosity and love.

As I think back, Uncle and aunt would have had an easier life after so many years of struggling in hardship if they did not continue with their outreaching support of the Lin Family.

Uncle has always showed great love for others up to his last hour. In all of my life, I have never seen anyone like uncle who in fact helped so many others succeed.

When Uncle was getting older and reaching his nineties, he still continued to make a significant contribution to his hometown in southern China and donated a house to the school in JieYiang.

We thank you for all you have done and want you to know that your legacy will continue throughout the years. Thank you ! "
